Questions
What is Bittern?
Bittern is a code review tool where you do the reviewing, with an AI guide you can ask about any line. You read the pull request, ask when you are unsure, and post the comments that matter, under your own name.
How is Bittern different from CodeRabbit and other AI code reviewers?
AI review bots read a pull request and post their own comments on it. Bittern is for the person who reviews after them: the AI only answers when you ask, and nothing is posted unless you write or approve it. It helps a human understand a change rather than reviewing it for them, so it works alongside a review bot as well as without one.
Does Bittern support GitLab or Bitbucket?
Bittern works with GitHub today. GitLab and Bitbucket, including self-hosted instances, are planned, most likely alongside a self-hosted version of Bittern for teams whose code cannot leave their network.
Is my code stored?
Bittern reads pull requests through GitHub as you. When you use the AI guide it keeps a copy of the repository at that pull request’s commits on its server so it can answer questions, and deletes copies that have not been used for 7 days. Your questions and the code needed to answer them go to the AI model you chose, and nowhere else.
Which AI models does it use?
You choose: a fast model for quick explanations and a standard one for deeper questions, from a short list including OpenAI and Anthropic models.
What can Bittern do on my GitHub account?
Only what you can already do. It acts as you, with your permissions, and only posts comments, approvals or merges when you click to do so.
How much does it cost?
Bittern is free during early access, with a fair daily limit on AI use.
Can I self-host Bittern?
Not yet. A self-hosted version, with your own AI model or gateway, is on the roadmap for teams with compliance requirements.
